Fernandes JdC, Portela LF, Rotenberg L and Griep RH (2013), "Working hours and health behaviour among nurses at public hospitals.", Rev Lat Am Enfermagem. Vol. 21(5), pp. 1104-1111.
Abstract: to analyse the differences between genders in the description in the professional, domestic and total work hours and assess its association with health-related behaviour among nurses.this is a transversal study carried out in 18 different public hospitals in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The data collection procedure was based on questionnaires. All nurses working with assistance were considered eligible (n=2,279).men and women showed significant differences in relation to working hours. The female group showed longer domestic and total work hours when compared to the group of men. In contrast, the number of hours spent on professional work was higher among men. For the women, both the professional hours and total work hours were often associated with excessive consumption of fried food and also coffee, lack of physical exercise and also the greater occurrence of overweight and obesity.both the professional hours and the domestic work hours need to be taken into account in studies about health, self-care and also the care provided within the context of nursing workers, particularly among women. The results add weight to the need for actions for health promotion in this occupational group and the importance of assessing the impact of long working hours on the health of workers.

Luz MRMP, Oliveira GA and Da Poian AT (2013), "Glucose as the sole metabolic fuel: Overcoming a misconception using conceptual change to teach the energy-yielding metabolism to Brazilian high school students", Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education., July, 2013. Vol. 41(4), pp. 224-231. Wiley-blackwell.
Abstract: A misconception regarding the human metabolism has been shown to be widespread among high school students. The students consider glucose as the sole metabolic fuel, disregarding that lipids and amino acids can be oxidized for ATP production by human cells. This misconception seems to be a consequence of formal teaching in grade and high schools. The present study reports the evaluation of a teaching strategy based on the use of a dialogic teaching methodology within a conceptual change approach to remediate that misconception. Students were stimulated to formulate hypotheses, outline experiments, and to discuss their outcomes. The results showed that students were able to reformulate their original concepts immediately after teaching. The majority of the students showed adequate learning of the topic eight months after the application of the teaching strategy, although some level of misconception recurrence was observed. The educational consequences of the teaching unit are discussed in the context of the possible reasons for its success as well as the need for similar initiatives at grade school to avoid the establishment of the misconception. Paschoalin HC, Griep RH, Lisboa MTL and de Mello DCB (2013), "Transcultural adaptation and validation of the Stanford Presenteeism Scale for the evaluation of presenteeism for Brazilian Portuguese", Revista Latino-americana De Enfermagem., January, 2013. Vol. 21(1), pp. 388-395. Univ Sao Paulo, Escola De Enfermagem De Ribeirao Preto.
Abstract: Objective: describe the process of transcultural adaptation and validation of the Stanford Presenteeism Scale for Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: Methodological study of the cultural adaptation and validation of the tool which involved 153 nursing staff and included six aspects of equivalence, obtained through the following stages: translation, first version of consent, retranslation, specialist committee, pre-test, study of test-retest credibleness and dimensional validity. Results: The stability of the items varied from moderate to almost perfect and the sequence constancy was almost perfect. Two factors were identified through the exploratory fact analysis: the first one included the physical aspects -completing work; and the second one the psychological aspects -avoided distraction. Conclusions: the results suggest adequacy of the tool in the Brazilian Portuguese version, indicating its use in the context of the study group and in similar groups, contributing to the study of evidences which consolidate strategies that favor the health conditions of the jobholders.

Rolando LGR, Salvador DF and Luz MRMP (2013), "The use of internet tools for teaching and learning by in-service biology teachers: A survey in Brazil", Teaching and Teacher Education., August, 2013. Vol. 34, pp. 46-55. Pergamon-elsevier Science Ltd.
Abstract: The study investigated the profile of use of internet tools by in-service biology teachers in the State of Rio de Janeiro. We identified four purposes of use: Study, Didactic, Professional Management and Personal Socialization. The pedagogical use internet tools proved to be small. It was mostly focused to the search for information about biological contents for individual use and to the download of materials to distribute to the students. We discussed the importance of articulating policies and programs of teacher education through the development of activities to raise awareness about the pedagogical potential of collaborative internet tools among Brazilian teachers. Santos MIPdO and Griep RH (2013), "Functional capacity of the elderly attended in a Unified Health System (SUS) program in Belém in the State of Pará.", Cien Saude Colet., Mar, 2013. Vol. 18(3), pp. 753-761.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate factors associated with functional capacity among the elderly attended in a public health program in Belém in the State of Pará. A sectional study was conducted with 259 elderly people attended in the Hiperdia/SUS program in the period from March to July 2010. The elderly were assessed using the modified physical performance test duly validated in Brazil. Pearson's Chi-square Test, in addition to variance analysis and logistic regression were used for the analysis. The elderly were 68.3 years on average (SD ± 6.2) and 71% were female. After adjustments for conflicting variables, it was seen that there were greater chances of worse performance on the test among women, the older and less educated individuals, and those complaining of knee pain and prior diagnosis of cataracts and fair/bad self-assessment of health. Functional capacity is an important health indicator to identify early risks of incapacity and requiring a periodic evaluation, in order to seek care strategies for maintaining the independence of the elderly.

Silva-Costa A, Fischer FM, Griep RH and Rotenberg L (2013), "Relationship between napping during night shift work and household obligations of female nursing personnel.", Int J Gen Med. Vol. 6, pp. 227-231.
Abstract: Night shift employment involves displacing sleep to the daytime. For female workers, the opportunity for daytime sleep is influenced by routine housework demands, which aggravates sleep deprivation. Allowing naps to be taken during the night shift of work is a frequent practice at some hospitals and can help reduce the effects of sleep deprivation. We hypothesize that an association between domestic work and the length of naps during night work exists for nursing professionals. To test this hypothesis, two cross-sectional studies were conducted in two different hospitals. In Study 1, female workers answered questionnaires regarding sleeping habits, professional work, and housework demands. In Study 2, data regarding napping during shifts was obtained by actigraphy, a noninvasive method of monitoring the human sleep-wake cycle. The demand for the performance of housework was measured by (i) domestic work hours (total time spent performing domestic work per week), and (ii) domestic workload, which considers the degree of sharing domestic tasks and the number of people living at home. The populations from the two studies were subdivided into groups, based on the duration of napping at work. Data on naps were analyzed according to domestic demands, using the Mann-Whitney and Chi-squared tests. Among the two study populations (Studies 1 and 2), those in Study 2 were older, had shorter professional weekly work hours, worked more night shifts, and dedicated more time to housework. significant associations were only found in Study 2, where greater time napping at work was associated with both greater time spent doing housework and greater domestic workload. The known benefits of napping during night shifts seem to be especially relevant for female workers who are more sleep-deprived from working more night shifts and who have higher demands for housework.

Silva Junior SHAd, Vasconcelos AGG, Griep RH and Rotenberg L (2013), "Test-retest reliability of the Work Ability Index (WAI) in nursing workers.", Rev Bras Epidemiol., Mar, 2013. Vol. 16(1), pp. 202-209.
Abstract: This paper assesses the test retest reliability of the Work Ability Index (WAI) in nursing workers. A self-administered questionnaire was applied twice to a group of 80 workers (nurses and nursing aides/assistants) at a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil within an interval from seven to fifteen days. The reliability was estimated using quadratic weighted kappa statistics, interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Bland and Altman plot. Eighty-one percent of participants were women aged betweenfrom 22 to 67 years (mean =39.1; SD=10.8 years); 36.3% had completed higher education. The global score of the WAI presented ICC= 0.79 (IC95% 0.67 to 0.86) and weighted kappa=0.69 (CI95% 0.50 to 0.80) for categorical WAI (classified as low, moderate, good and excellent). The quadratic weighted kappa of the WAI items ranged from 0.39 to 0.82 and the Bland and Altman plot did not show a systematic pattern. The agreement between the test and retest measures shows an acceptable degree of reliability, suggesting the adequacy of the assessment process among nursing workers.
